PART-TIME JOB OPENING SYMPOSIUM COORDINATOR (San Francisco/L.A.)

Job Description:
Under the supervision of the Research Committee of the Impact 209 Coalition, the Symposium Coordinator will plan and execute an academic symposium that will bring together scholars and social scientists to examine the impact of Proposition 209, California’s anti-affirmative action initiative. The symposium will be co-sponsored by the Impact 209 Coalition and by academic institutions at UCLA and will take place in the fall/winter of 2007. The symposium will focus on research areas that have been largely unexplored, including the secondary socio-economic effects of Proposition 209 and the effects of the initiative’s provisions relating to public employment and contracting.

Responsibilities:
The Symposium Coordinator will be responsible for planning and conducting the symposium described above. It is anticipated that all of these responsibilities will be shared to some degree with the co-sponsoring academic institutions.

The Coordinator will work closely with a planning committee comprised of advocacy staff from leading San Francisco-based civil rights organizations such as the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights, Equal Justice Society, Discrimination Research Center, Greenlining Institute, and Chinese for Affirmative Action.

However, the Coordinator will have ultimate responsibility for ensuring that all tasks are completed. Specific responsibilities will include:

1) scheduling the symposium and securing location and dates;
2) issuing a call for papers;
3) reviewing abstracts submitted;
4) requesting full papers as appropriate;
5) coordinating the logistics of the event;
6) overseeing compilation of submitted papers.

Requirements & Qualifications:
* Excellent organizational, written and verbal skills
* Demonstrated ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and communicate effectively with coalitions
* Experience with discrimination research and/or background in social sciences, policy and/or economics helpful
* Experience with qualitative and quantitative methods

Other:
This is an 8 month part-time contract position. It is anticipated that the position will require an average of 20 hours/week, with a start date in April 2007. Exact hours and start date are negotiable.

Pay is $17.50/hour to $22.50/hour, dependent upon experience.

The Symposium Coordinator will work out of Impact 209 offices in downtown San Francisco, with some travel to Los Angeles required (reimbursable).
