The massive flooding in Metropolitan Manila in the Philippines has claimed hundreds of lives and displaced over 700,000 people – in what is considered the worst such calamity in the region’s history. The impact of this unfortunate event will be felt for many months ahead and the country will need a lot of help from the global community in rehabilitation efforts as well as in dealing with resulting food & basic supply shortages and the spread of disease.

Individual community members and groups in the San Francisco Bay Area have organized this fundraising event to benefit the victims of typhoon Ketsana (Ondoy), and are very encouraged by the overwhelming show of support.

The organizers of this benefit also stand in solidarity with the typhoon victims in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, as well as those who were most recently affected by the tsunami and earthquake in American Samoa, Samoa and Indonesia. “We encourage all those who can to equally support the various relief efforts being organized by other community groups in the Bay Area and elsewhere to assist our unfortunate brothers and sisters in the Asia-Pacific region, ” said Keesa Ocampo, Community Relations Assistant, ABS-CBN International – North America.

$20 suggested donation but any amount is welcome.

About the tragedy and what’s being done: Typhoon Ketsana on Sept. 26 ravaged Manila and nearby areas with twice as much rainfall as Hurricane Katrina, producing over 17 inches of rain. The government now believes that around 250 people have died, a figure that’s expected to rise. Many are still unaccounted for. Nearly 400,000 people are living in temporary relief shelters in the capital, Manila, and surrounding areas, as they have been displaced from their homes.

As of October 1st, 161,124 families had been served by the disaster relief operations of the ABS-CBN Foundation. More await help.
