On Friday, June 24, 2016, the Filipino Bar Association of Northern California (“FBANC”) will proudly host its 36th Annual Installation Dinner: Filipiniana, at the beautiful Rotunda Building located at 300 Frank H Ogawa Plaza, in Oakland.  Please consider becoming an event sponsor to show your support for FBANC’s programs and mission.FBANC is one of the leading Filipino-American bar associations in the country and serves over 400 Filipino-American attorneys and law students in the Bay Area from a wide range of legal backgrounds. This year, FBANC is eminently pleased to honor Chief Justice of California Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye with the FBANC Trailblazer Award. The Chief Justice has paved the way for the advancement of our community as the first Filipina-American and the second woman to serve as the state’s chief justice. The Chief Justice of California will also deliver FBANC’s Keynote Speaker address. 

FBANC is excited to also honor California State Assemblymember Rob Bonta, with the Jose Rizal Award. Mr. Bonta not only exemplifies all of the leadership qualities of our Filipino national hero, Jose Rizal, but he continues to pay tribute to our community by authoring legislation requiring state school curriculum to include Filipinos’ contributions to the farm labor movement in California.

Our Annual Installation Dinner is the most important event for Filipino-American attorneys in Northern California and draws a diverse attendance that includes attorneys, judges, and leaders in the Filipino-American community. 35th Annual Installation DinnerOn Friday, June 5, 2015, the Filipino Bar Association of Northern California (“FBANC”) will proudly host its 35th Annual Installation Dinner at Peony Restaurant, 388 9th Street in Oakland.  In a little over three decades, FBANC has grown into one of the most well-established Filipino-American bar associations in the country and has over 400 members in the Bay Area from a wide range of legal backgrounds.  Through its members and affiliates, FBANC regularly reaches hundreds of members of the Bay Area’s legal community.  Our Annual Installation Dinner is the most important event for Filipino-American attorneys in Northern California and draws a diverse attendance that includes attorneys, judges, and leaders in the Filipino-American community.

            This year, FBANC will honor our Past Female Presidents as well as award four scholarships to deserving law students. Our keynote address will be delivered by Rose Cuison-Villazor, the first Filipina tenured law professor in the United States. She has been an Invited Speaker and Presenter at numerous law schools throughout the country and has been awarded for her extraordinary contributions to legal education. FBANC will also honor Advisory Board Member and Past FBANC President, Billy Chan, with the Jose Rizal Award. Billy has not only been instrumental in FBANC’s growth over the years, but he exemplifies all of the leadership qualities of Filipino national hero, Jose Rizal.

CELEBRATION

We have a lot to celebrate.  The 2013-2014 year has been especially productive for FBANC.  This year was dedicated to coalition building with fellow Filipino lawyers nationwide. Our very own advisory board members David Mesa, Billy Chan, Mark Punzalan, Laurie Rose Lubiano, and Gemma Mondala have taken an active role in creating the National Filipino American Lawyers Association (NFALA) and serve as NFALA’s Regional Governors for Northern California.

FBANC also took a pro-active role in its immediate response to assisting the victims of Typhoon Haiyan.  FBANC raised approximately $26,000 to aid the survivors of the typhoon. Within two weeks of mobilizing, FBANC collected more than a ton of non-perishable goods for the ongoing relief efforts in the Philippines. The donations resulted from an overwhelming community response to FBANC’s call for assistance. FBANC has committed the funds to the National Alliance for Filipino Concerns (“NAFCON”) and the non-perishable goods to the West Bay Pilipino Multi-Service Center (“West Bay”). Through their respective networks in the Philippines, NAFCON and West Bay, both of which are FBANC’s grassroots partners, distributed the donations to those in need in the most devastated regions of the Philippines.

We held 4 free legal clinics in areas with large populations of Filipinos/Filipino-Americans, in Oakland, Daly City, and Union City. We started the FBANC Professional Development Program, a program designed to help new attorneys and law students with their resumes and interviewing skills.  With the help of Raymond L. Ocampo, Jr., we will award law student scholarships totaling $10,000.  In addition, we continue to focus on mentoring our future FBANC leaders by co-sponsoring events such as Legally Asian, a conference aimed at encouraging high school and college students to pursue a law degree and involving Filipino-American college and law students at our events.
