FBANC Congratulates Justice Patricia Guerrero

FBANC emphatically congratulates Justice Patricia Guerrero on her nomination by Governor Gavin Newsom to the California Supreme Court.

A first-generation Californian raised by immigrant parents from Mexico, Justice Guerrero would be the first Latina to serve on the California Supreme Court. Since 2017, Justice Guerrero has served as an Associate Justice at the Fourth District Court of Appeal. From 2013 to 2017, Justice Guerrero served as a Judge at the San Diego County Superior Court and as Supervising Judge for the Family Law Division in 2017. Prior to her time on the bench, Justice Guerrero served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney at the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Southern District of California from 2002 to 2003 and worked at Latham & Watkins, where she was elevated to Partner in 2006. Throughout her legal career, Justice Guerrero has performed many hours of pro bono work assisting clients in immigration matters. Justice Guerrero is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley and Stanford Law School.

FBANC also applauds Governor Newsom and Luis Céspedes, Judicial Appointments Secretary, for the historic nomination to promote inclusion and maintain diversity on the California Supreme Court. In announcing his nomination, Governor Newsom had the following to say about Justice Guerrero:

Born and raised in the Imperial Valley by immigrant parents from Mexico, her extraordinary journey and nomination to serve as the first Latina Justice on the bench of our state’s highest court is an inspiration to all of us and a testament to the California Dream’s promise of opportunity for all to thrive, regardless of background or zip code.

On February 15, 2022, FBANC President Jennifer Sta.Ana sent the following correspondence to Secretary Céspedes:
