March 18, 2023
In partnership with the the University of California, Davis Bulosan Center for Filipino Studies and with support from the Filipino American National Historical Society Museum, the California Museum launched the "California Is in the Heart" exhibit on October 29, 2022. The exhibit ended on April 30, 2023.
“California Is in the Heart” is the first museum of its kind, celebrating the historic contributions of Filipinos/as/xs in California from their first landing at Morro Bay in 1587, through the labor and civil rights movements of the 1960s, to current leadership in local and statewide office.
The exhibit’s Law and Politics section features the first Filipina Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court Tani Cantil- Sakauye, the first Filipino California Attorney General Rob Bonta, and former NAPABA President Ruthe Ashley. The exhibit features key labor leaders of the country like Larry Itliong and Philip Vera Cruz. Additionally, the exhibit features leaders like Bulosan Center Executive Director Dr. Robyn Rodriguez, community leader Cynthia Bonta, and FBANC President Raymond Rollan.
In collaboration with SacFALA, and with the support of NAPABA and NFALA, FBANC organized an event on March 18, 2023 that honored the leaders featured in this exhibit, but also recognized the contributions of all Filipinx leaders who continue to make positive impact for our community. The celebration was hosted by Ruthe Ashley, and featured remarks from the Bulosan Center, Cynthia Bonta, NAPABA President-elect Anna Mercado Clark, NFALA President Gage Javier, and a keynote address from Chief Justice Sakauye.
