SUPERVISORY TRIAL ATTORNEY (CHIEF, ELECTRONIC SURVEILLANCE UNIT) - Criminal Division
About the Office:
The Criminal Division of the U.S. Department of Justice is seeking an experienced attorney to serve as Chief of the Electronic Surveillance Unit ("ESU") within the Office of Enforcement Operations. The position is based in Washington, D.C.
The Office of Enforcement Operations (OEO) provides investigative and prosecutorial support, legal advice, and statutorily required review and approval in almost 40 distinct subject areas. OEO oversees the use of the most sophisticated investigative tools at the federal government's disposal, including electronic surveillance, the Federal Witness Security Program, media subpoenas, and witness immunity requests.
Job Description:
The Chief is responsible for overseeing all issues and programs of the ESU, and performs a variety of other functions at the request of the Director of OEO. In addition to supervising the day-to-day operations of a fast-paced unit of approximately 30 attorneys (with the assistance of several deputy chiefs), the incumbent is also responsible for staying abreast of, and managing, the legal and technological challenges affecting this area of enforcement; coordinating with federal law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders, including other Department of Justice Divisions; and maintaining a robust program of training and outreach to prosecutors in the field. The latter includes travel to the Districts.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications: Interested applicants must possess a J.D. degree, be duly licensed and authorized to practice as an attorney under the laws of any State, territory of the United States, or the District of Columbia, and be an active member of the bar in good standing. To qualify at the GS-15 grade level, applicants must have at least four (4) years post J.D. legal experience, one of which was specialized experience at, or equivalent to, the GS-14 grade level. Examples of specialized experience include: independently performing legal analysis; composing pleadings, briefs and other court documents involving unique and/or difficult legal issues in civil or criminal litigation; conducting highly complex civil or criminal litigation; and leading paralegals and support staff.
Preferred Qualifications:
Litigation experience;
Experience with the use of sensitive covert investigative tools;
Policy experience on criminal justice matters;
Strong advocacy and legal writing skills;
Experience supervising the work product of attorneys;
Experience directing training and outreach efforts;
Experience briefing at the leadership level; and
Experience directing interagency coordination.
Salary:
