Director, Legal Clinics:

Melanie Violan

My name is Melanie Yabut Violan and I am running for Co-Director of Legal Clinics. I am an Associate Attorney at Candelaria PC and I practice in the areas of Family Law, Trusts and Estates, Probate, Guardianships, and Conservatorships.

I graduated from UC Berkeley and attended John F. Kennedy University School of Law. While in law school, I earned the Public Interest Certificate for my work with assisting public agency unions negotiate their rights under their Memoranda of Understanding.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, I was an intake volunteer for the EDD clinic offered by FBANC. I felt personally connected to the mission as I had friends and relatives who were directly affected by the thousands of layoffs during the pandemic. It was at that point that I saw what FBANC’s legal clinics were about – providing a necessary service to people who could not navigate the legal system on their own.

While I would be new to the FBANC Board this year, if elected, I would bring my own experiences and knowledge while honoring the previous Co-Directors in this position. I am excited for the opportunity to work with Glicel Sumagaysay and the rest of the FBANC board to provide programming that truly serves the needs of our partner communities and empowers them with the knowledge and resources they need.

I hope to hold at least two virtual or in-person clinics this year in the practice areas of estate planning, immigration law, family law, and employment law. I think these practice areas will cast a wide net to help as many people as possible with the topics that affect their day-to-day lives the most.

I look forward to the opportunity to be in this role and to serve the community in a new way. Thank you for your consideration and I would be honored to have your support.
