About the Filipino Bar Association of Northern California

Founded in 1981, the Filipino Bar Association of Northern California (“FBANC”) is an organization of attorneys, judges, and law students dedicated to serving the Filipino community. Through the volunteer work of its members, including lifetime members, FBANC offers various service programs, including regular, free legal clinics, professional development programs for attorneys, and mentorship for law students and young attorneys. The organization also provides a voice for and advocates on behalf of Filipino interests in various forums.

With low numbers of Filipino-Americans in the legal profession, it is a priority for FBANC to connect law students with practicing attorneys to provide guidance and mentorship. FBANC, in fact, was initially created more than three decades ago to provide mentorship opportunities for Filipino-Americans interested and/or entering the legal profession. FBANC has continued this tradition to the present day, where we’ve developed mentorship groups typically comprised of a law student, a young attorney, and a more experienced attorney. Through these personalized groups, participants learn from one another, acting as mentor and mentee alike. In addition, we provide both social and professional programming to encourage and foster strong mentorship relationships.  Moreover, FBANC presents scholarships to qualified law student members who have shown a commitment to issues involving the Filipino-American community.

About Asian Americans Advancing Justice – Asian Law Caucus

Founded in 1972, Asian Americans Advancing Justice – Asian Law Caucus is the nation’s first legal and civil rights organization serving the low-income Asian Pacific American communities. Advancing Justice – ALC focuses on housing rights, immigration and immigrants’ rights, labor and employment issues, student advocacy (ASPIRE), civil rights and hate violence, national security, and criminal justice reform. As a founding affiliate of Asian Americans Advancing Justice, the organization also helps to set national policies in affirmative action, voting rights, Census and language rights.

Since the vast majority of Asians and Pacific Islanders in America are immigrants and refugees, Advancing Justice – Asian Law Caucus strives to create informed and educated communities empowered to assert their rights and to participate actively in American society. This perspective is reflected in our broad strategy which integrates the provision of legal services, educational programs, community organizing initiatives and advocacy.
